Fifth/Sixth Year

Courses In S5 And S6

The way forward for students after Standard Grade varies according to the needs and ability of the individual. The Pastoral Care team interview all students in March/April with a view to ascertaining their aspirations and advising them of the best course of action. It is important that a sensible and coherent course of study is followed by students in S5/S6, from whom a high level of commitment is expected.

At present there are five option columns [see accompanying option form from which are chosen five subjects to be studied in S5 or S6. All S5/S6 pupils must study Religious Education and Personal & Social Development (PSD) and participate in two periods of interest-based studies (either PE or selected Modules).

Subjects can be studied at the following levels.

  • Advanced Higher
  • Higher Grade
  • Intermediate2
  • Intermediate 1

Naturally the availability of staff and the number of students involved will determine whether a particular class will run or not.

Where a subject is not available at St Mungo's Academy, it may be possible for 16-18 year old students to study this subject at another school or college.

There is a programme of Careers Guidance for 5S/56 students and advice i, given on the completion of College and University entrance applications.

In the month of June prior to commencement of 5S or 56 programme, students will begin their proposed course of studies.

After the SQA resu!ts

in August, students will again be interviewed and their course of study will be confirmed or adapted in the light of actual awards received.

At each stage of the consultation process, parents will have the opportunity of discussing S5 and S6 options with Pastoral Care Staff.
