Design and Manufacture

 

Design and Manufactureprovides a broad and practical experience in product design and manufacture, with opportunities for learners to gain skills in designing and communicating design proposals.

 

The subject develops design skills and knowledge and understanding of materials and manufacturing processes.

 

Design and Manufacture provides opportunities for learners to enhance their creative and practical skills and provides opportunities to build challenging, coherent and enjoyable learner journeys through all levels.

 

Design and Manufacture has added value assessments that provide personalisation and choice in assignments at National 4, National 5 and Higher with question papers also providing added value at National 5 and Higher has a hierarchical Unit structure that provides progression from National 4 to Higher.

 

Graphic Communication

 

The course introduces learners to the diverse and ever-increasing variety of presentation methods employed in graphic communication.

 

The course provides opportunities for learners to gain skills in reading, interpreting and creating graphic communications. Learners will initiate, develop and communicate ideas graphically. They will develop spatial awareness and visual literacy. It combines elements of creativity and communicating for visual impact with elements of protocol and an appreciation of the importance of graphic communication standards, where these are appropriate.

 

The aims of the course are to enable learners to:

  • develop skills in graphic communication techniques, including the use of equipment, materials and software
  • extend and apply knowledge and understanding of graphic communication standards and protocols, where these apply
  •  develop an understanding of the impact of graphic communication technologies on our environment and society

Practical Woodworking

The Practical Woodworking course is workshop-based. It provides a broad introduction to practical woodworking. The course provides opportunities for learners to gain skills in reading drawings and diagrams. It allows pupils to plan activities through to the completion of a finished project.

 

The course allows learners to engage with technologies. Learners will use a variety of tools, equipment and materials. It helps learners develop practical skills in numeracy.

 

The aim of the course is to enable learners to develop:

  • skills in woodworking techniques
  • skills in measuring and marking out timber sections and sheet materials
  • safe working practices in workshop environments
  • practical creativity and problem solving skills
  • knowledge of sustainability issues in a practical woodworking context.
