You are here: Subjects > Languages > S4-S6 Senior Phase

Starts August 2013/14

Learners who progress with Modern Foreign Languages into the Senior Phase will continue to develop their language skills through a thematic approach. In Fourth Year, Students will study topics related to Language and Work, Travel and Tourism and Personal and Social Language.

The Higher course allows pupils to further develop their skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing in the target language. The course focuses on relevant cultural and social themes, and aims to provide learners with a comprehensive knowledge of both the language and the diversity of life in a country where the language studied is spoken.

Following successful completion of the Higher course in S5, learners have the opportunity to study either the International Baccalaureate in Modern Languages or the Advanced Higher qualification in Sixth Year. These university level courses develop skills of independent learning and critical thought through themes of a social, political & economic nature. Learners will also study a work of literature in the target language and undertake an independent research project.
