We offer a broad general education from S1 – S3

S1 COURSE

Our S1 course consists of the following 3 units-:

Ready Steady Cook

In this unit the young people learn how to work in a safe and hygienic manner, follow a recipe, weigh and measure food correctly and use different parts of the cooker to make a variety of dishes.

Ready Steady Eat

In this unit the young people continue to build on skills already achieved. They also learn about Healthy Eating using ‘The Eatwell Plate’ produced by the Food Standards Agency. They learn about portion sizes and dietary targets.

Scottish Sandwich

This is a Design and Make unit. The young people have to plan, design, carry out and evaluate a design brief.

Pupils learn through a variety of activities including discussion, individual tasks and group work.  In practical cookery lesson we use fresh, healthy ingredients. This is crucial to our role in encouraging young people to learn about the food they eat and following a healthy diet.

Cup Cake Club

This club is offered on Thursdays after school for young people in S1 who enjoy baking.

S2 COURSE

S2 pupils are equipped with the basic skills and knowledge to further their studies. The units which are covered include:-

Design and Make a Cushion

This unit introduces the young people to the world of textiles.  Here they learn sewing techniques ranging from design, cutting out, pinning, tacking, machine stitching. They design and make a unique cushion using the technique of appliqué.

 Foods of the World

In this unit the young people investigate foods of the world through project work and practical cookery.
 You Are What You Eat

Our young people learn about their food choices in more depth. The function and sources of nutrients are discussed at this stage along with nutritional labelling. Dietary diseases and their prevention is also covered in this unit.

As a parent/carer it is very helpful if you can encourage your child to help out in the kitchen at home (that includes the washing up !).
