Homework Schedule

Year 1

Art and Design

DRAWN or WRITEN recordings of items, of visual interest; that is relevant to the normal classwork. This may take the form of pupils being asked to bring into school an image from a newspaper, photograph. An image that is relevant to the class work i.e. someone they like as part of the My Hero’, project in September.

Pupils will be asked to start to collect images that can be used in an expressive lesson for Figure Composition.

Written work is undertaken as part of the Art Studies unit i.e. Glasgow Artists from September.

COMPETITIONS are encouraged and over the years these have been a great success, as a homework task. Materials will be given to those pupils who will make good use of them, as well as those pupils, who would benefit from additional art.

Information Technology

Homework is issued by topic approximately once a week.

Drama

Once per unit. This can take the form of research, character sketch or watching of a TV programme for follow up discussion. Homework can also involve the learning of lines for a short scene or the scripting of dialogue.

English

40-50 minutes of homework will be issued weekly to include private reading, writing reviews, spelling and language work. Pupils are encouraged to review their classwork at home each day. 

Home Economics

Homework issued every 2 weeks in relation to topic being studied.  This could take the form of worksheets/practical activities/research/posters. The time taken to complete depends on task being completed.

Maths

15-20 minutes of routine/ investigative homework 3 times per week.

One piece of formal homework (approximately 30 minutes) every 2-3 weeks.

Modern Languages

At least one written homework task per week. Additional learning homework (vocabulary / grammar) may be issued after each period. One extended research project on an aspect of Italian/French culture will also be issued per term.

Music

8-10 written homework tasks per term

Regular musical instrument practice at home or at school music clubs. Pupils can take a copy of the appropriate music home.

P.E.

2 or 3 written/investigation tasks within the Health course, across the year. Regular recording of scores/information within school planner.

R.E.

 10 short tasks throughout the year (e.g. interview) and one assignment (investigation, research or essay)

Science

Year 2

Art and Design

Pupils receiving Instrumental Lessons in school are expected to :

Practise for 15-30 minutes every day at home. Pupils can take a copy of the appropriate music home.

Meet the weekly targets set by the Instrumental Instructors.

Learn specific concepts relating to the music they are studying.

Research their instrument and various composers relating the music they are studying.

Pupils are encouraged to purchase musical instruments for home through the school’s VAT free purchasing scheme.

Pupils who are members of the band, choir and/or instrumental groups are expected to:

Be prepared for rehearsals through regular practice of the music being rehearsed.

Work as part of a team in preparation for public performance. Choir members will be given specific tasks to learn the words of songs for public performance.

P.E.

A parental information form will be produced informing the guardian of the work their children are doing and their opinions on the work. A Homework List of 45 topics has been developed to encourage a variety of studies suitable for homework. This is given to pupils who would benefit with extra art. This will encourage Higher Order Thinking which will be further developed for pupils opting for National 5. Written homework is in the form of critiques on Artists and Designers using prepared materials.

Information Technology

Homework is issued by topic approximately once a week.

Drama

One piece of written work/ research or line learning per unit covered .The focus begins to move to production skills as well as acting. Homework tasks are as above and include design work e.g. costume, make up and props.

English

One hour of homework will be issued weekly to include private reading, writing reviews, spelling and language work. Pupils are encouraged to review their classwork at home each day. 

Home Economics

Homework issued every 2 weeks. This will take the form of time plans/worksheets/practical activities/REHIS food hygiene workbooks. A greater emphasis is on practical preparation techniques and pupils are encouraged to carryout practical tasks at home relating to techniques taught in class.

Maths

20-30 minutes of routine/investigative homework 3 times per week.

One piece of formal homework (approximately 40 minutes) every 2 weeks.

Modern Languages

At least one written homework task per week. Additional learning homework (vocabulary / grammar) may be issued after each period. One extended research project on an aspect of Italian/French culture will also be issued per term.

Music

Continue class work at home relating to the Composition Folio.

Complete concept tasks reinforcing learning in – Scottish, Pop, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20thCentury units.

Pupils receiving Instrumental Lessons in school are expected to :

No written homework before Christmas. After Christmas, pupils will choose an activity to investigate in more detail. 2 or 3 written tasks will be required this term.

 10 short tasks throughout the year (e.g. interview) and one assignment (investigation, research or essay)

Science

Pupils are provided with level 4 or 5 questions which are similar to exam type questions on a weekly basis. Pupils are also encouraged to research relevant topics and to complete a project. Continual assessment encourages study skills and pupils are provided with revision material.

Social Subjects

Homework will be issued regularly and may consist of one formal task per week or a more significant investigative piece to be undertaken over several weeks. It should take around 30 minutes per week to complete. Students are expected to complete any unfinished classwork.

Technical

Homework is issued by topic once a week.

 

 

National 4

Art  and Design

Pupils are encouraged to start collecting their source materials for both topics; Design and Expressive. Homework is given to support the class work. Pupils will be given a folder for this and WILL take their folders home. A parental information form will be produced informing the guardian of the work their children are doing and their opinions on the work. A Homework List of 45 topics has been developed to encourage a variety of studies suitable for homework. This is given to pupils. Written homework is in the form of critiques on Artists and Designers using prepared materials.

Art Studies worksheets /reports and evaluations are issued as a matter of course to support the written element of both courses. As greater emphasis is placed on Expressive / Design folio for Nat 4. However, it is important that the written element is done at weekly intervals whereby one period per week is given over to Art Studies.  Evaluation and Assessment worksheets have been developed to support the class work; this can be seen as an additional homework exercise.

Business Studies

Pupils will be issued a task, relevant to the current topic, each week which will take at least 1 hour to complete.

Drama

Once a week with reference to Drama Lexicon and Concepts. There are also exam type questions to be completed as homework. Homework is determined by the nature of the production skill chosen by the learner e.g. actors learn lines and create character cards; costume designers prepare sketches and checklists.

English

At least one hour of homework every week…’ as well as a reminder that ‘grammar resources can be found on the English page of the school website for those who wish to do some extra work.

Home Economics

Homework issued every week. This takes the form of worksheets/time plans/practical activities/REHIS food hygiene workbooks (if not achieved in S3). Greater emphasis on practical preparation techniques. Pupils have to practice techniques taught in class at home to improve standard. If this is a problem due to home circumstances pupils are encouraged to come to dept. during lunchtime to practice techniques.

Pupils are provided with N4 level questions weekly for homework. Pupils are encouraged to research topics for their AVU and are provided with revision material to improve study skills for NAB’s and on-going assessments.

Social Subjects

Homework will be issued regularly and may consist of one formal task per week or a more significant investigative piece to be undertaken over several weeks. Tasks will be based on examination skills and should take 1 to 1.5 hrs. Students are expected to complete any unfinished classwork.

Technical

For design and manufacture and graphic communication, homework is issued once a week and should take no longer than 1 hour.

 

National 5

Art and Design

Parents and carers are encouraged to assist pupils with the learning of lines in preparation for the acting exam in March. The Faculty host an Open Evening before the practical exams so that parents and carers can observe and encourage progress before the visiting examiner sees individual performances.

English

Up to one and a half hours of homework every week depending on level of study.  Written homework will be issued after most periods and will include on-going revision of: ‘Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation’ strategies; the ‘Scottish Text’; the ‘Critical Essay’ text; and the ‘Writing Portfolio’.  Pupils should read newspaper articles on a regular basis.

Pupils are required to complete National 5 level past paper questions twice a week. Pupils are encouraged to research for their Assignment and are also supplied with revision material to enhance study skills for external exams and NABs. Time taken for each activity is dependent on the activity.

Homework will be issued regularly and may consist of one formal task per week or a more significant investigative piece to be undertaken over several weeks. Tasks will be based on examination skills and should take 1 to 1.5 hrs. Students are expected to complete any unfinished classwork.

Higher

A new Homework List of 45 topics has been developed to encourage a variety of studies suitable for homework and useful for portfolio development. This is given to S5 pupils. This will encourage Higher Order Thinking which will be further developed for pupils opting for Higher. Written homework is in the form of critiques on Artists and Designers using prepared materials.

Art Studies worksheets /reports and evaluations are issued as a matter of course to support the written element of both courses. As greater emphasis is placed on the Higher It is important that the written element is done at weekly intervals whereby one period per week is given over to Art Studies.

Evaluation and Assessment worksheets have been developed to support the class work; this can be seen as an additional homework exercise.

A Mature outlook and attitude is expected. A desire for continuous study and the development of ideas is paramount. Creativity does not only happen in school pupils should regularly look for developing their ideas and themes at home and in school.

The very nature of the Higher requires the production of a great deal of quality work in a variety of media. Classwork alone is insufficient if a good pass is to be awarded.

Business Studies

Pupils will be issued a task, relevant to the current topic, each week which will take at least 1 hour to complete.

Drama

Once a week with reference to Drama Lexicon and Drama Concepts. There are also exam type questions to be completed as homework on prescribed text which this year will be ‘Antigone’ by Sophocles. During the first unit ‘Drama Skills’ candidates will be required to write scripted extracts and directors plans for homework. They will also be required to learn lines for other candidate’s scenes in which they will take part. .As we progress through the course homework is determined by the nature of the production skill chosen by the learner e.g. actors learn lines and create character cards; costume designers prepare sketches and checklists .Throughout the course learners will be expected to reread the prescribed play ‘Antigone’ at home and be able to discuss it with the teacher and others in class. There will also be three theatre trips in the session. Learners will be expected to write a review of each production as homework.

Parents and carers are especially encouraged to help candidates learn lines and quotes which is one of the biggest challenges as they approach the acting exam in March

English

Approximately two hours of homework every week depending on level of study.  Written homework will be issued after most periods and will include on-going revision of: ‘Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation’ strategies; the ‘Scottish Text’; the ‘Critical Essay’ text; and the ‘Writing Portfolio’.  Pupils should read articles from the broadsheet press on a regular basis.

Grammar resources can be found on the English page of the school website for those who wish to do some extra work.

Maths

60 minutes of routine/investigative homework 3 times per week.

One piece of formal homework (60-90 minutes) every 2 weeks.

Pupils are provided with a variety of homework activities which are issued twice weekly. These are based on past paper questions, revision material for NARs and assessments, research for assignment and  the time scale for homework  will vary dependent on the activity.

Homework will be issued regularly and may consist of one formal task per week or a more significant investigative piece to be undertaken over several weeks. Tasks will be based on examination skills and should take 1 to 1.5 hrs. Students are expected to complete any unfinished classwork.

Technical

For design and manufacture and graphic communication, homework is issued once a week and should take no longer than 1 hour.


 

Advanced Higher

Music

Work independently on specific targets setting, revising and consolidating

Meet and surpass the weekly targets set by the Instrumental Instructors.

Learn specific concepts relating to the music they are studying.

Research their instrument and various composers relating the music they are studying.

Pupils are encouraged to purchase musical instruments for home through the school’s VAT free purchasing scheme.

Pupils who are members of the band, choir and/or instrumental groups are expected to:

Be prepared for and on some occasions lead rehearsals through regular practice of the music being rehearsed.

Work and lead as part of a team in preparation for public performance.

Choir members will be given specific tasks to learn the words of songs for public performance.
