Computer Games Development

Computing and Information Science is vital for everyday life; it shapes the world in which we live and its future.

Computer scientists play key roles in meeting the needs of society today and for the future, in fields that include science, communications, entertainment, education, business and industry. Our society needs more Computer Scientists and for all young people to have an informed view of the IT industry and its contribution to the economy.

By studying Computing and Information Science, learners will:

  • learn programming skills, database design, creation of websites, technical aspects of computer systems and devices, computer networking and security, and more.
  • will develop transferable skills in designing and implementing solutions to a wide variety of problems.

This course is not about learning to use standard office applications, although they will be used throughout the course.

IT Essentials

IT Essentials is a qualification offered by CISCO within St Mungo’s Academy and led by two trained CISCO lecturers, Mr Gallagher and Mr Greechan.  CISCO is the world’s biggest manufacturer and distributer of IT equipment.

The subject focuses on computer systems, hardware and software and offers young people the chance to gain an external qualification.  Once completing the IT Essentials course, you will be a trained accredited computer grade 1 technician.

IT Essentials Hardware and Software offer a completely different perspective on computing in that you will learn how to build a computer from the very start.  From plug to processor, to memory, to network cards, you learn to build and maintain a computer at every level.

If you’re interested in designing, developing and playing computer games, then this is an ideal option.  We deliver two / three national qualification units which specifically looks at aspects of designing and developing computer games.

The aim of Computer Games Development is to gain an understanding of processes involved in the final stages of computer game development. Candidates will learn how to use their chosen game development environment to assemble all the elements and produce a working game. Candidates will acquire an understanding of the evaluation process and then plan and deliver activities to promote a computer game.

Computer Games Development is offered as a series of national qualification units.  There are 40 hours allocated for each unit at SCQF levels 4, 5 and 6.
