ART & DESIGN in ST MUNGO’S ACADEMY
 
Introduction
 
‘If you could shut your eyes for a second …there is nothing but darkness; the visible world is severed. Think about this for a moment, and then open your eyes. You are now receiving pictures, colours, shapes objects and dimensions; everything you see has been designed, drawn out, constructed or made by someone who took an Art & Design course. Art and Design promotes aesthetic understanding, visual awareness, knowledge and appreciation.
 
Courses in Art and Design, from C f E through to New Higher, comprise the three elements of expressive, design and critical /evaluation activities. Within and across these elements our young people develop knowledge, understanding and appreciation and are involved in creative and aesthetic activities associated with art and design practice.
 
Our young people through communicating their thoughts; their ideas and feelings, in a variety of ways and in range of  contexts, can exercise critical and evaluate skills in judging their own work, that of their peers and of professional artists and designers.
 
Art &Design encourages candidates to use a range of media and technology to understand, appreciate and respond to their world in creative visual and non-visual ways. Art & Design promotes creative thinking, innovation and enterprise, and encourages self-reliance, initiative, problem solving and the development of personal opinions and imagery and Creativity.
 
Art &Design classes offer a rich and supportive learning environment, with effective and enjoyable practices. That draws upon a skilful mix of approaches, including:
  • Active learning and planned lessons
  • Problem-solving activities
  • Opportunities to develop creative thinking
  • Opportunities to practise presentation skills
  • Partnerships with professionals and other creative adults
  • Use of relevant contexts, familiar to young peoples’ experiences  
  • Exploring less familiar contexts
