S1 to S3

Our young people will build on their learning from Primary School: Close links with our feeder primary schools and a very successful Transition programme helps to ensure our S1 pupils make a very positive start to their Secondary education.

Our young people in S1 to S3 will be following a Broad General Education in mathematics where they will follow courses at an appropriate level. The broad areas of study are:

Problem Solving: At the heart of Mathematics and integral to our teaching and learning.

Number, money and measure
·         Estimation and rounding
·         Number and number processes
·         Multiples, factors and primes
·         Powers and roots
·         Fractions, decimal fractions and percentages
·         Money
·         Time ( progressing to Speed, Distance,Time)
·         Measurement ( perimeter, area, volume)
·         Mathematics – its impact on the world, past, present and future
·         Patterns and relationships
·         Expressions and equations.

Shape, position and movement
·         Properties of 2D shapes and 3D objects
·         Angle, symmetry and transformation.

Information handling
·         Data and analysis
·         Ideas of chance and uncertainty.

A key feature of the Curriculum for Excellence is the development of algebraic thinking from an early stage. Research shows that the earlier algebraic thinking is introduced, the deeper the mathematical understanding will be and the greater the confidence in using mathematics.

Our young people’s learning will also be enriched through interdisciplinary learning:
In their study of measurement, our young people’s learning will link with the art department on work by Leonardo da Vinci and Proportion. They will also investigate art, symmetry and measurement in a project on Tiling, early on in S1.
Our young people will use their own data from PE to display graphs and charts and analyse performance.
During Italian week, our S1 pupils explore the work of Fibonacci and investigate how his work influences art, architecture and nature.
There are many other opportunities for rich learning experiences where links with other curricular areas are developed.

SUCCESSFUL LEARNING

  • Make sure you come to class prepared:
Have a pen, pencil and calculator (we recommend the Casio fx83 or similar).

  • Always give your best:
Don’t be afraid of making mistakes – you learn from them.

  • Trust your intuition – it can help you solve problems.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions – they show that you’re thinking.
  • Always complete homework tasks to the best of your ability – remember to ask for support when you need it.
  • If you are absent, make sure you get a note of the work missed and catch up on homework.
  • Be organised and prepared in the run up to assessments.
  • Enjoy learning and your success.
