         ‘PROMOTING DEEPER LEARNING’

Math[s] is the vocabulary for your own intuition’ Dan Meyer

‘To face the challenges of the 21st century, each young person needs to have confidence in using mathematical skills, and Scotland needs both specialist mathematicians and a highly numerate population.’
Building the Curriculum 1

Mathematics is important in our everyday life, allowing us to make sense of the world around us and to manage our lives effectively.

In St. Mungo’s Mathematics department, we are committed to fostering an enthusiasm for maths by involving our young people in rich, active learning opportunities, often involving real life contexts.
Our young people are encouraged and challenged to think creatively and intuitively to solve problems and to build confidence in learning and applying essential mathematical skills.

Our aim is to promote deeper learning and understanding of mathematical concepts which will allow our young people to progress confidently through each stage of learning and enable them to reach their full potential in maths.

Mathematics equips us with many of the skills required for life, learning and work and we aim to develop skills in our young people by building confidence in numeracy, financial awareness, reasoning, analysis and problem solving. Our young people are encouraged to work together on collaborative tasks, to discuss ideas and strategies and deepen understanding.

Mathematics plays an important role in areas such as science or technologies, and is vital to research and development in fields such as engineering, computing science, medicine and finance. Learning mathematics gives children and young people access to the wider curriculum and the opportunity to pursue further studies and interests.
